Projects I worked on:
--- 08/2016: Kucheza ------------------------------------
|
Monkeybizniz: 'Kucheza'
My most recent project during my time at Monkeybizniz, was the project 'Kucheza'. Kucheza is a game for (beginning) farmers in South Africa. The player has to make tough financial decisions, which will determine their ability to care for his/her family. During this project, I was (partly) responsible for overall Game Design decisions, playtesting and the implementation of financial data in XML format. Disclaimer; the graphical elements were provided by my boss, Dimme van der Hout. |
--- 08/2016: Luts Plas Academie --------------------------
|
Monkeybizniz: 'Luts Plas Academie'
One of the projects I helped design during my time at Monkeybizniz, was the project 'Luts Plas Academie'. 'Luts Plas Academie' is part of a clinical process, designed for children with bladder difficulties. I helped design this app for this specific young audience, so they are guided through an otherwise enduring and tough process. The app motivates them to stick to their schedule, and it assists the clinical professionals in recording the kids' activities. During this project, I was (partly) responsible for overall Game Design decisions, graphic design, animation, narrative visualization and bug fixing. Disclaimer; most of the graphical elements were provided by my boss, I animated them and created missing assets. |
--- 06/2016: The World Of Colos --------------------------
|
Graduation project: 'The World Of Colos'
During the last few months of my study 'Game Art' at the HKU, I worked on 'The World Of Colos'; a worldbuilding project in which I had the opportunity to write, draw, animate and build my own story. In this story, two factions can't seem to live with each other in the last livible place on Colos. The Falkir and Auga both have their own interpretation of the events... the player is asked to decide who they believe more. In my graduation project, I searched for a way to make my player an 'active listener', by questioning their moral stance and empathetic feelings for the fictional characters. --- 03/2016: Profiler -------------------------------------
|
Educational cardgame: study profiling
For a short while, I worked alongside teachers to develop a simple cardgame for studens of my school. We wanted to make the process of chosing a specific educational path easier for them, by playing this game in small groups. The students have to explain to their peers who they are (based on the 4 given profiles of 'Artist', 'Maker', 'Entrepreneur' or 'Researcher') and who they want to be. Based on several smaller playtests, we found success early on. My role was to illustrate the 4 profiles (each character with two visual variants), and create a fitting graphic style for the whole game. |
--- 12/2015: Mind Your Tone -----------------------------
|
Mind Your Tone: Interactive Narrative
'Mind Your Tone' is an interactive narrative game, in which I researched 'empathy through play' with my team 'Pigmentaal'. During this project we held dozens of small playtests, to discover how to create an interactive story in which two players are encouraged to discuss their actions. Two players play as 'Aurel' and 'Flori', two children searching for a peaceful solution to a never ending conflict. Our goal was to stimulate collaboration and communication, by making narrative choices as a team. During this project, I was team leader, created visuals/animations, wrote parts of the story and helped with the various playtests as a narrator. |
--- 10/2015: Heet in Huis ---------------------------------
|
Monkeybizniz: 'Heet in Huis' trailer
During my time at Monkeybizniz, I helped them animate a trailer for a collection of mini-games, called 'Heet in Huis'. The project was a collaboration between the Dutch fire department and student organizations, to get awareness for the dangers of house fires. During this project, I was responsible for animating assets and frame-by-frame animation. Disclaimer; most of the graphical elements were provided by my boss, I animated them and created missing assets. |
--- 07/2015: Bosbeestje ----------------------------------
|
Bosbeestje: helping children with Autism
Together with my team 'Gameversation', I helped create a serious game called 'Bosbeestje'; a playful app in which young children with Autism are stimulated to collaborate and communicate with peers. After an extensive research period, we used our conclusions and data to create a playable prototype, which we tested with our target audience. The early results were very promising; most of the tested children showed progress in their social skills! Of course, it goes without saying that our small-scale project's results are nothing more than 'promising', but in the given time period, we achieved positive results. During this project, I was the team leader, created visuals/animations, helped researching various topics and collected data during our playtests. --- 01/2015: Attack of the Oozeheads ---------------------
|
Monkeybizniz: internship
During my internship at Monkeybizniz, I was part of a larger project called 'Attack of the Oozeheads'. This project was a game Monkeybizniz is working on for some time, and it was our job (as interns) to port the Flash game to the iPad. My job was to design several UI elements, tweak the game mechanics/balance and to help promote the game. I really enjoyed working on this project, because of the variety of tasks I had: - analyzing the Flash version. - extracting mechanics and variables to a Gamedesign Doc. - porting and optimizing assets to the iPad version. - creating an animated storyboard for promotional purposes. |
--- 12/2014: Poke -a- Santa -------------------------------
|
Monkeybizniz: internship
During my internship at Monkeybizniz, I was the designer and animator of a small project named 'Poke -a- Santa'. The idea was to give clients an interactive and funny christmas card. One of the requirements was to represent Monkeybizniz as an enthusiastic serious game developer. During this project I made most of the assets (apart from the Santa design) and I was responsible for all of the animations. The christmas card is available for iOS and Android, and can be found here: http://monkeybizniz.com/xmas/ Disclaimer; The Santa design is made by another Monkeybizniz artist (Rigtje Schootstra), I designed the other assets and animated them. |
--- 09/2014: Imaginator ----------------------------------
Monkeybizniz: internship
During my internship at Monkeybizniz, I was the concept artist and fellow designer of a small project called 'Imaginator'. The assignment was to create an accessible app to inspire artists in a new way. 'Imaginator' is a tool for artists to get inspired by generating a sentence, based on user input. The user can add or remove traits, which influences the randomization of the sentence. Because the output is a description for a character/item/environment, it can easily be used to kickstart a brainstorm session. |
--- 01/2014: Carson's Journey -----------------------------
|
Narrative design: Carson's Journey
During my second year at the HKU, I joined a Narrative seminar. During 2 weeks, I developed a small narrative experience with 2 students. 'Carson's Journey' is about an old man, living by himself in the woods. Each day, he walks the same path.. but not without reason. Along this journey, Carson visits places which reminds him of the past. But, as time goes by... memories start to fade. He mixes up different events, which made him lose his way back. 'Carson's Journey' is a narrative experiment, in which we tried to give the player a sense of loss, isolation and dementia. |
